Do you like chilli? Or other spices? Or does the mere thought of such foods make you uncomfortably hot? Your preference for spiciness may say more about you than you think.
Assuming you are among those who smother their pizza in a mountain of chilli sauce—well done! And to your guts, too. Your digestive system must be hardened to the max by this.
But when spicy food can become dangerous, you can read here.
The palate and the head
You might be surprised to learn that your taste in food has a more significant psychological impact than just the physical ones associated with eating spicy food.
After all, according to this recent study, if you tend to prefer spicy foods, it’s very likely that your life is, shall we say – spicier, too! At least, that’s the finding of this survey of 2000 Americans. So there’s a pretty unusual correlation between mentality and chilli peppers. Who would have thought that?
Eating spicy: psychological significance?
Conducted on behalf of Frank’s Redhot company and the Onepoll statistics institute, the results of this study show, for example, that people who like spicy food are more likely to try new things in their lives.
The research results: 76% of people who eat spicy food are likely to try new activities, 62% consider themselves more attractive, and 66% are more satisfied with their lives.
Do shy people eat less spicy food?
Conversely, people who eat less spicy food are likelier to describe themselves as shy in everyday life. In contrast, 41% describe themselves as empathetic and 50% as calmer and more curious.
So the results are less clear regarding spiciness, but we still see specific alignments. So, less spicy eaters are less inclined to describe themselves as great adventurers.
Spice and culture
The statistical survey, however, misses some points, especially regarding cultural differences. After all, where are the cultures where spicy food is as typical as bread for breakfast?
Moreover, for some countries that use fewer preservatives, which we, fortunately, have in the West (refrigerator, freezer, etc.), chilli is the tool of choice to counter the risks of quickly expiring food!
